OneDay we’ll get this straight

After the item I posted Wednesday about the switch to the OneDay plan for garbage and recycling collection, I spoke with a very nice lady at City Hall, and she straightened out one piece of erroneous information I’d received from Mr. Future Politico.

Since I receive recycling service at the front curb I will continue to receive recycling service at the front curb. But since I now receive trash collection — bagged trash, not bin — in the alley, that moves to the front curb to join the recycling after I get my gray bin.

Anyone else in this existing recycle-curb, bagged trash-alley boat will receive recycle and trash bin collection out front.

So that renders the physics question of how a too-small alley transforms into a big-enough alley moot.

A follow-up e-mail from the city contained further information.

I liked this part: People who now receive alley collection for both recycling and trash IN MOST CASES — the city’s bold caps, not mine — stick with alley collection for both. The exceptions? Fine question, indeed.

Here’s the link to a map — zoom in 400 percent, according to the instructions — that’s supposed to clarify things. Hope it works better for you than it did for me.

I loved this part:

NOTE: [in bold red type] "Front curb” is the curb of the street directly in front of your home "Side street curb” is the curb of a street which is not directly in front of your home.”

They’re kidding, right? There are people out there who don’t quite grasp the concept of “front curb?”

OK then.

If you’re still confused, and I can understand why when phrases like “in most cases” are used, I’d suggest calling (214) 671-8877. If you do call, I also advise sticking with “yes” or “no” questions and avoiding anything that requires abstract thought, which is somewhat ironic because this whole thing is pretty abstract.End of story

HaHaHa....According to this map, my house is moving from alley to curb service on March 1...but I don't have an alley! Apparently I've been missing out on this service this whole time.....

OK, I've been doing recycling since 1936, and yes we did it back then! Most of our "garbage" went into the compost heap. All empty cans were used to grow seedlings in and bottles were taken back to a store for cash, yes cash! Newspapers were used at the bottom of the canary's cage as well as to make paper pots for more seedlings or shredded for litter in the hen coop. Leftover grease was mixed in with scraps from the table and given to the dogs. Made their coats shiny and their poop easy to break down. Oh, gross, I can hear you say. Too bad because the rabbit poop and chicken litter we had went into the compost heap too but no dog or kitty poop. Grew great veggies and flowers. I continued the practice over the years and even today I use plastic water & milk bottles for various uses connected with my garden. I still have a couple of small compost heaps and put veggie scraps & such in it. Still make paper pots and still buy chicken litter enriched garden soil since I don't have chickens or rabbits. I don't take newspapers since I have this lovely online publication & others to read.
I still shred other papers though and use it for various garden protections. As to the current notice, I already have a huge blue recycle bin that would take me to South Padre if I had the courage to roll it down my steep driveway, so instead, I use blue bags. As to the new gray garbage collection cart, if it is as big as the blue thingy, I'll have to find King Kong to roll it down the same driveway each Thurs. since that will be MY day for pickup. Old ladies can't roll much of anything, ya know!

Hey materlady...I'm on the downhill side of my street, so rolling the bins is no prob for me, but the folks across the street need helmets, knee pads and brakes for theirs.

Don't know where you live, but I'd be happy to run yours down the hill for you. Perhaps our buddy, Bruce could connect us.

Wow, y'all could expand the Singles service to include a Bin Rolling Matchmaking Service for singles or those that are unsingles, too!

After spending 20 minutes listening in English and Spanish, "Don't Han Gup," while on hold after calling 311, and after explaining to the nice operator that I failed the Sanitation Dept.'s IQ test, she looked it up by my address and told me that OUR day will be Thursday. Real neato, then, when my two closest neighbors told me that they heard it was Friday. Maybe the City will be playing hopscotch with those big trucks that're too big to go down the alley.

I think it's nice of Science Lady to offer to help materlady get her garbage cart to where it needs to go. Hopefully more neighbors will offer to help out when and where they can. We have a neighbor who travels and he's asked us to help him. We're happy move his cart back off the street rather than to look at it. In exchange, he sweeps our sidewalk from time to time when he does his own.

I read the city's Web site, and while it did seem very specifically worded, I think they were probably being overly cautious given the confusion some people seem to have had with that "red box" that was in the letter we all got. Seems more than a few people mis-read the letter to mean that Dallas was doing away with all alley service. And that's just not the case.
