Would you recognize a yellow-rumped warbler if you saw one?

It seems Dallas is teeming with them. They aren’t as common as the house sparrow, but still, according to the Great Backyard Bird Count, Dallas has plenty of warblers, yellow-rumped among them.

The Great Backyard Bird Count is an annual event geared toward even the most novice bird enthusiast. Anyone of any age in any area can help gather data for this joint effort of the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, the National Audubon Society, and Bird Studies Canada.

All it involves is looking at the birds in your backyard or neighborhood park for at least 15 minutes between Feb. 12-15. Check birds you see off a list and submit the information through the GBBC Web site.

Your list will be tallied with the lists of other birdwatchers across the nation to take the “largest instantaneous snapshot of bird populations ever recorded,” according to the GBBC site.

“Taking part in the Great Backyard Bird Count is a great way to get outside with family and friends, have fun, and help birds — all at the same time,” said Audubon Education Vice President Judy Braus. “Even if you can identify a few species, you can provide important information that enables scientists to learn more about how the environment is changing and how that affects our conservation priorities.”
